See the session times

Horsemanship IV is open to graduates of Horsemanship III or individuals who have successfully completed the Placement Examination for Horsemanship IV. Students sign up for Horsemanship IV in six-week sessions, with classes meeting once a week for one hour. Students are encouraged to come to class early and tack up their own horses. Many students find they remain in this class for several sessions to complete the requirements to move on to Horsemanship V. This is normal; riding at this level becomes a physical activity that requires muscle coordination beyond that of the normal pleasure rider. Horsemanship IV begins to introduce classical principles of riding and also begins to explore riding theory.

If enrollment demand exceeds program capacities we utilize a lottery system to ensure a fair placement of applicants in classes.

Students must be at least 12 years of age to participate. For enrollment and scheduling information, please click here.

EDUCATIONAL INTENT

During this program, students will refine all previous level skills as well as develop the following skills:

  • Mount unassisted from the ground.
  • Perform the following arena figures without cones and understand their use:
    • Four- and six-loop serpentines
    • 20-meter circle
    • Ride on the quarter line and center line
    • Ride a proper corner
  • Ride the canter at the two-point position and three-point position.
  • Perform basic turns at the canter in two point and three point.
  • Recognize and obtain correct canter leads.

Students wishing to move on to Horsemanship V must fulfill the requirements listed in the classes leading up to and including Horsemanship IV. Students wishing to bypass Horsemanship IV must take a Placement Exam.

The placement exam includes written and riding parts, and participants must score 90 percent or better on the above material to be eligible to advance into Horsemanship IV.
