- Horses Groom Routinely Groom Each Other (Heard Behavior)
- Equipment:
- View location where kits are stored.
- Important to keep kits clean.
- Private
- Each horse has their own for hygiene purposes.
- Return kits after use.
- Review the items in the kit
- Hoof Pick
- Metal Curry Comb
- Round Rubber Curry
- Grooming Glove / Curry Glove
- Stiff (dandy) Brush
- Body Brush
- Soft (finishing) Brush
- Terry Cloth Towel
- Mane Comb
- Tie the Horse in the Aisle:
- Place Kit in a Safe Area (where horse does not step on it)
- Keep the horse perpendicular to the wall.
- Cleaning Hooves:
- Have Horse pick up his feet properly
- View for Obvious Problems or Injuries
- Check for Thrush
- Demonstrate How to Properly Have Horse Lift Feet
- Demonstrate How to Hold Horse's Foot
- Demonstrate the Picking Method.
- Cleaning the Coat:
- Metal Currynot used on face or legs
- Is used carefully for heavy dried mud
- Could be used to clean hair from brushes
- Rubber Currynot used on face or legs
- To remove loose fur & loosen deep dirt, dander
- Demonstrate Circular Motion
- Stiff Brush (Dandy Brush)
- To remove deep dirt & dander
- Use for First Brushing
- Short Strokes that end by Flicking Dirt Out and Away
- Follow direction or the Hair
- Curry Gloveall over horse
- For sensitive areas where horse objects to use of stiff brush/curries
- Legs
- Belly ( Especially Girth Area)
- Face
- Body Brush-all over horse
- To bring oils to surface of coat, makes the horse shine
- Use long sweeping strokes
- Follow direction or the Hair
- Finishing Brush-all over horse
- to remove surface dust
- Has the softest, longest bristles
- Use long stokes
- Makes coat shiny
- Cleaning the Face
- After brushes use a terry cloth to clean
- For neat, finished appearance
- Eyes, nostrils, mouth, ears
- Grooming the mane & tail:
- Tail: Comb with Fingers or wash & condition to Prevent Damage to tail
- Eliminate Knots and Snarls w/out breaking hairs
- Use Stiff Brush to finish tail
- Use Comb to Finish mane
- Pulling, Trimming, and Braiding are safety and aesthetic options
